What Is Chronic Pain?
| Chronic pain is generally pain that persists for over 3-6 months. It can result out of an injury or accident, or be caused by deterioration of pre-existing conditions. Chronic pain is often associated with a pattern of recurrence and is frequently accompanied by emotional (depressive) symptoms. At least one in five Canadians suffer from chronic pain yet only 30% of sufferers are treated. The persistence of chronic pain can become a major obstacle when trying to live one's life. Approximately 20% of Canadians with chronic pain admitted to experiencing severe pain on a daily basis. Many reported having great difficulty attending social events and performing usual daily activities. Studies also show that patients with chronic pain tend to have lower incomes. Since early treatment is most effective, it is important that patients begin treatment sooner rather than later. Reducing one's pain can improve one's quality of life and increase one's ability to function. |
